Doesn't the term Eating Disorders come to your head when you think of the skinny models? Share your views on how far you think the fashion industry is responsible for the increasing number of younger and younger girls who are becoming Eating Disorder patients and are at the verge of death.
Most of the time, but not always. I mean, some models just are naturally skinny. However, there are some who really DO starve themselves so they look more "runway-worthy" and THAT is when it goes overboard. In that sense the fashion industry IS responsible for more young girls contracting Eating Disorders.
ReplyDeleteBut it might also NOT be totally the fashion industry's fault, if you look at it in another light. Yes, they may be subliminally promoting "skinny-ness" and starving to be pretty, but then beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, right? It is up to the audience, the girls watching and seeing these, if they become influenced by the fashion industry. Though we can't entirely blame them, the environment they grew up in and the people they hang around with may also affect their way of thinking. So maybe there is no definite source to blame for all of this. Maybe.
ReplyDeleteIn my view the fashion industry started with this whole issue of skinny. I agree that quite a number of models might be naturally slim but that does not necessarily mean that the industry portrays such skinny models to be the ''cream'' of the society with their boney physical appearance. This affects the film industry as well. Now a days we see numerous celebrities wanting to lose weight and the size 0 figure trending in Hollywood. There are all sorts of ridiculous diets that they are adopting, such as the maple syrup detox diet that Beyonce did for 1o days to shed 20 pounds for her role in Dreamgirls. Now isn't this extreme? See, why does the ''Dreamgirl'' have to be skinny? Think about it... Isn't it the fashion Industry that is putting this into our minds?
ReplyDeleteI think that it should not be blamed on the fashion industry because some people are naturally born skinny and underweight or a high metabolism rate. You may say that these models shouldn't be used as public role models (not limiting "fashion" to skinny people) but does it mean it should only be limited to at least people who are "healthy"? Like being skinny/anorexic, being overweight is not good too. Plus, I have proof that anorexia is not mostly caused by influence from other people. I'll post it up.
ReplyDeleteOf course, to most people, eating disorders naturally are the first thing that comes to mind when they think of skinny and anorexic models. However, I feel that there are many more reasons why people develop anorexia and we should shed some light on these other reasons to change peoples' point of view. Sure, we cannot deny that skinny and anorexic models do affect atleast some people, however we cannot say it is the biggest reason, some people are born with the disorder. There are people in this world who are born with the eating disorders and anorexia, sometimes it's hereditary, sometimes it's just developed. They grow up thinking they are fat or there is no reason to eat so much, and growing up with this kind of bad mindset will affect them and cause them to worsen and their health to deteriate more. Some people can develop anorexia due to peer pressure or society's impact. They see some people who are thin and are popular for example and want to be like them. There are different reasons, sometimes it's natural. Thus, my conclusion is that the fashion industry does not exactly affect most of these anorexic people and young girls.
